One step closer to carbon-neutral cement production
It is now official. With the final agreement signed, the EU-supported ACCSION project has become a reality, and work can now begin in earnest on establishing one of Europe’s first fully integrated onshore CCS value chains.
As part of the project, Aalborg Portland, together with its partners, will develop, construct and operate the CO₂ capture facility, which from 2030 is expected to deliver a significant CO₂e reduction of 1.5 million tonnes annually.
With commissioning of the facility potentially taking place as early as the end of 2029, Aalborg Portland will become the first cement plant in the EU capable of producing both grey and white cement with a net-zero CO₂ footprint.
“The official agreement with the EU Innovation Fund is a milestone for both Aalborg Portland and the cement industry as a whole. CO₂ capture is a crucial technology for reducing the unavoidable process emissions associated with cement production, and with this agreement, we can aim to become carbon neutral in Aalborg as early as 2030.
This will represent the largest single CO₂ reduction in Danish history and will therefore make an enormous contribution to Denmark’s national climate targets. With ACCSION, we are on the threshold of a new era for the construction industry, and that is something we should be both proud of and humble about,” says Søren Holm Christensen, CEO of Aalborg Portland.
Through the ACCSION project, Aalborg Portland will establish one of the first fully integrated onshore CCS value chains in Europe. The project will also be among the first to capture CO₂ from two separate production units, the grey and white cement production lines respectively, in one integrated process.
The captured CO₂ will be transported via pipeline to a new onshore storage facility, creating a cost-effective and scalable solution for the cement industry.
Aalborg Portland has allocated 50,000 square metres for the CO₂ capture facility, which will become one of the largest CCS facilities in Europe.
